Winter 2007-08 Basketball Registration Form K-HS
Basketball Rules
Wheatland
Athletic Association runs an Indoor Winter recreational
basketball league for boys and girls in grades K - 12.
Registration begins in September and forms are distributed
to children in the District 204 schools and some District
308 schools. You may also obtain a registration form
online or
come into the
WAA
office.
Due to the continuing growth in the area,
growing interest in WAA basketball programs, and the
extremely limited gym facilities, the program is divided
into TWO sessions.
Session 1: Kindergarten coed, 1st – 4th plus 7th – 8th
grade girls,
and 1st
– 2nd grade boys.
Nine game season with games on the following Saturdays
è
November 3rd, 10th, 17th,
December 1st, 8th, 15th,
January 5th, 12th, 19th
(No games or
practices are scheduled when school is not in session.)
Session 2: 5th – 6th girls, and 3rd – 12th
boys.
Nine game
season with games on the following Saturdays
è
January 26th, February 2nd, 9th,
16th, 23rd, March 1st, 8th, 15th, 22nd
The program includes one practice session
each week based upon availability of facilities. Times,
locations and week night will depend on gym availability.
Occasionally, a facility will be eliminated at the last
minute, requiring some adjustments to game or practice times
or locations. There are other school and community events
scheduled in the same facilities we acquire permission to
use. Any district wide school closures will be
communicated to teams on our website as soon as we are
notified. Please check the website regularly for
updates.
Kindergarten does NOT have a practice during
the week. This group will now be set up as a practice
/ clinic / mini-game combined format.
NOTE
ON CHANGE: To allow girls an opportunity to prepare
for middle school basketball tryouts, 7th and 8th
grade girls will now play during session 1 (November 3rd
– January 19th).
Generally, teams will be made up using the
following criteria: school, subdivisions, and local area. We
try to accommodate requests; no guarantees can be made
regarding a player’s assignment to a specific area or team.
Our recreational program for grades 9th
– 12th will NOT be open to high school team
players.
The emphasis of this program will be to enhance the skills
of all players in an atmosphere of sportsmanship and
competitive fun. Teams will be assembled using our
standard criteria. Participation may be limited due to
facility availability, so REGISTER EARLY.
Depending on participation levels (players
and volunteers), and facility availability, some portions of
the program may be combined, modified as necessary, or
cancelled. Requirements for participation include:
The primary emphasis of the program is to
teach basic skills to all players and enhance the
skills of the more experienced players. The program
encourages player creativity in the development of both
individual and team skills.
WAA’s goal is to create an atmosphere of fun and good
sportsmanship for all players. Emphasis on only
winning is not the purpose of our program. No
standings are kept. All players participate equally.
The games
are always played on Saturday at a District 204 school.
Every effort is made to assign each division to one school.
For
example all 3rd grade boys games might be played at
Young Elementary School. You will be given a schedule
at the beginning of the season showing where and when your
games are each Saturday. Practices are held during the week
in the evening at District 204 schools. Coaches will
attend a coaches meeting before the season starts. At
this meeting they will be given their rosters and schedules
and they will sign up for their practice time. Coaches
are able to select where and when they want to practice.
(This selection is limited by the gym time we have to offer
and have been given District permission to use.)
Gym time
is a precious commodity each winter because many
organizations are competing for time. District 204 is
very generous to WAA but they must accommodate everyone.
We request all gym time in each of the schools and the
district then grants us permits for some of the time we
request. We regret we can not always give coaches gym
time in their neighborhood school, but it is our hope that
each team will find something suitable. Teams will have
group and individual photos taken during the season.
The K through 3rd grade teams will receive medals at the end
of their season.
